U.S. Senate Doubles Down On Supporting Israeli Genocide Against Palestinians— Dark Day For America

Writer's picture: Howie KleinHowie Klein

There were 3 roll calls in the Senate last night on resolutions of disapproval that Bernie introduced to end U.S. participation in Israel’s  genocide against Palestinians. They were all rejected. All Republicans and most Democrats voted against the proposals, forever tying themselves to the worst crime against humanity there is. The first— to block the sale of 120-millimeter tank shells— lost 18-79. These were last night’s

heroes:

  • Dick Durban (D-IL)

  • Martin Heinrich (D-NM)

  • Mazie Hirono (D-HI)

  • Tim Kaine (D-VA)

  • Angus King (I-ME)

  • Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM)

  • Ed Markey (D-MA)

  • Jeff Merkley (D-OR)

  • Chris Murphy (D-CT)

  • Jon Ossoff (D-GA)

  • Bernie Sanders (I-VT)

  • Brian Schatz (D-HI)

  • Jeanne Shanheen (D-NH)

  • Tina Smith (D-MN)

  • Chris Van Hollen (D-MD)

  • Raphael Warnock (D-GA)

  • Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)

  • Peter Welch (D-VT)

Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) disappointed everyone by voting “present.”

The second resolution— to block the sale of 120-millimeter high-explosive mortar shells— picked up a 19th senator, George Helmy (D-NJ), who must have embarrassed the hell out of pretend-progressive Cory Booker, who voted with the genocidal caucus on all three resolutions.

And then the third resolution lost Helmy and Ossoff.

AIPAC darlings, Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Ben Cardin (D-MD), Zionists and big advocates of genocide, pushed back against Bernie. And Jeremy Ben-Ami, the president ofthe pro-Israel/anti-genocide J Street pushed back against Schumer, Cardin and the Republicans: “This debate and vote signify another step toward a relationship in which the US can hold Israel accountable for its actions and its use of the weapons we provide in the same way we enforce US laws for all other recipients of US security assistance… Contrary to opponents’ claims regarding today’s vote, US support for Israel’s security was never at risk. All of the Senators who voted for a resolution of disapproval today have supported tens of billions of dollars in security assistance to Israel throughout their careers. No Senators are calling for anything approaching an arms embargo and all of them endorse continued support for Iron Dome and other defensive systems.”

My TV isn’t working. I have to get a new one. I get sound but no picture. I barely use it anyway— but when I’m getting dressed and brushing my teeth, etc. Anyway, I put it on and heard a well-scripted but whiny attack on the ICC for issuing an arrest warrant against Netanyahu and wondered if the set had flipped from MSNBC to Fox— or if MSNBC had already changed format. But, no, it was one of the regular right-of-center MSNBC hosts defending genocide, José Diaz-Balart, son of Rafael Lincoln Díaz-Balart y Gutiérrez, fascist Cuban deputy interior secretary under Batista. (The Castro-hating Rafael was Castro’s brother-in-law and he was best known for taking a personal hand in torturing prisoners and for founding a fascist group to fight Castro from Miami, the White Rose.)
