All Trump had to see was a pair of polls yesterday showing Katie Britt far ahead for Mo Brooks' hopes to shatter. The dream of Trump re-endorsing him ended 3 hours after Trump saw Britt leading 54.6% to 36.4% among likely Republican primary voters in one poll and 51-39% in another. That's because more than anything, Trump wants to show the rubes who worship him that he is on the winning side. Yesterday he endorsed McConnell's RINO candidate Katie Britt, sort of appending himself to a parade that's already far ahead.
On primary day, Brooks came in second in a 6 candidate race, enough to win him a spot in the June 21 runoff. But Mike Durant was in a solid third place and now his voters seem to be breaking in favor of Katie Britt.
The other variable Trump looks at besides polling is money. As of the June 1 FEC deadline, Britt has raised $7,454,888 to Brooks' $3,003,799. On top of that, about $13.5 million have been spent by independent Republican groups pushing Britt, while just $7 million has been deployed for Brooks.
Another warning signal for Trump was the question "If Donald Trump were to make an endorsement in the Senate runoff, would that make you're or less likely to support his endorsed candidate?"
More Likely- 33%
Less Likely- 13%
Makes No Difference- 54%
And more specifically: "If Donald Trump were to were to see-endorse Mo Brooks in the Senate runoff, would that make you're or less likely to support his endorsed candidate?"
More Likely- 27%
Less Likely- 17%
Makes No Difference- 56%
Even Trump can read numbers like those. As Alabama Public Radio reported this morning "A year ago, former President Donald Trump called Alabama U.S. Senate hopeful Katie Britt the 'assistant' to 'RINO' Senator Richard Shelby, and not what voters want... What a difference a year, and political losses in Georgia, appear to make. AL.com notes it was within hours of news that Britt had surged in the polls ahead of her runoff opponent, Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks, that Trump reversed his earlier criticism, and endorsed Britt to replace retiring U.S. Senator Richard Shelby."
Brooks, who spent the last 2 weeks kissing Trump's ass and begging for a re-endorsement reacted badly:
Trump's laughable endorsement called Britt "a fearless America First Warrior" and included this verbiage her campaign gave him to use: "Katie is an Incredible Fighter for the people of Alabama. As President and CEO of Alabama’s Business Council, Katie has been working hard to Grow Alabama’s Economy, Create Jobs, and Restore the Great American Dream. She has the Total Support and Endorsement of Chairman Jimmy Parnell and the Alabama Farmers Federation." Trump added his usually one-size-fits-all bullshit about how she supports "our under siege Second Amendment, stands up for parental rights, and will fight for our military, our vets, and election integrity. Above all, Katie Britt will never let you down. So Get Out and Vote for Katie Britt on June 21st in the Alabama Senate Runoff-- she has my Complete and Total Endorsement!"
The Dothan Eagle underscored the ridiculous nature of the Trump-Brooks relationship that is more likely than ever to play out after the runoff when Brooks is will probably testify to the select committee in a way that will not be helpful to Trump.
Last year I endorsed Mo Brooks for the U.S. Senate because I thought he was a Fighter, especially when it came to the Rigged and Stolen Presidential Election of 2020. The evidence is irrefutable. Then, out of nowhere, and for seemingly no reason, Mo backtracked and made a big mistake by going Woke at our massive Cullman, Alabama Rally. Instead of denouncing the Voter Fraud in the Election, Mo lectured the crowd of 63,000 people saying, ‘Put that behind you, put that behind you,’ meaning that, in effect, forget the Rigged Election and go on to the future. The problem is, if you do that, it will happen again. Also, why do Republicans allow Democrats to get away with rigging and stealing elections? Mo was strongly booed by tens of thousands of Great Alabama Patriots for abandoning his constituents, and what they know to be true about the Election Fraud. He foolishly started listening to the wrong consultants and not to the people, and his 54-point lead evaporated overnight. Likewise, his words caused me to withdraw my Endorsement, and Mo has been wanting it back ever since-- but I cannot give it to him! Katie Britt, on the other hand, is a fearless America First Warrior.
Less than a year ago, Trump was very loudly disparaging Britt, calling her the "assistant [to] the RINO Senator from Alabama, close friend of Old Crow Mitch McConnell, Richard Shelby... She is not in any way qualified and is certainly not what our country needs."
Right wing senators like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul are actively campaigning for Brooks, an insurrectionist who-- liked them-- tried to overturn the election.
