Trump was at a MAGA rally in western Pennsylvania Saturday evening when a would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, age 20, a registered Republican, shot at him with an AR-15-type semiautomatic rifle from a rooftop and either hit a teleprompter causing glass to cut Trump's ear or grazed his ear with the bullet, but in either case failed to kill him. It was a superficial wound, though one rally attendee was killed and at least 2 others may have been injured. Crooks was killed by Secret Service agents.
David Graham wrote that “The incident seems likely to escalate what is already an extremely tense election cycle… Trump’s campaign rallies have frequently witnessed violence or the threat of it, though not in the past directed at the candidate. Protesters demonstrating against Trump have been assaulted, and Trump himself has encouraged attacks against them. The most serious incident of political violence in recent American history occurred on January 6, 2021, following a Trump rally in Washington, D.C., when a crowd incited by Trump attacked and sacked the U.S. Capitol, bloodying police officers and disrupting Congress. Some protesters erected a gallows, carried zip ties, and said they were hunting for then–Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence.”
He noted that “The incidents fit into a broad pattern in notable incidents of political violence in the United States. In June 2017, a domestic terrorist opened fire on members of Congress practicing for an annual baseball game, gravely wounding Steve Scalise, a member of House Republican leadership. Two months later, neo-Nazis rampaged through the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, and one woman was killed. In 2018, a man mailed pipe bombs to several perceived opponents of Trump. Several men were convicted in a 2020 plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat. In 2022, a man was arrested for plotting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Another man was killed after attacking an FBI office in Ohio, and a man who attacked Pelosi’s husband was recently convicted… What happens in the aftermath of the incident today will depend a great deal on what details emerge about this shooting and how Trump recovers. But it will also depend on the way the nation’s leaders react. Many national politicians immediately responded with condemnations of violence and prayers for Trump. Political scientists have found that even voters who hold antidemocratic attitudes are influenced strongly by top political figures. In this fragile moment, the nation desperately needs prudent and wise leadership.”
Democratic politicians, like Jerrad Christian of Ohio (above) immediately denounced political violence. Republicans reveled in the strategic advantage of the attempted assassination and used it to stir up hatred, like this ultra-reactionary Republican congressman from Georgia:
Derrick Van Orden (R-WI): “President Trump survives this attack— he just won the election.”
Tim Burchett (R-TN): “This will energize the base more than anything. And he, you know— with his fist in the air and he didn’t want to leave. And he’s yelling, fight, fight, fight. That’ll be the slogan.”
Majorie Traitor Greene (R-GA), figuratively foaming at the mouth: “Someone just tried to ASSASSINATE President Trump.The Democrats and the media are to blame for every drop of blood spilled today.”
South African fascist crackpot and multi-billionaire, Elon Musk, claimed the Secret Service may have deliberately allowed the attack. He endorsed Trump for president minutes after the failed assassination. (Reminder: billionaires should not exist.) “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery… Last time America had a candidate this tough was Theodore Roosevelt… Extreme incompetence or it was deliberate. Either way, the SS leadership must resign.”
Why is the media still making it sound like he was shot in the ear? It was clearly debris that him as common sense should tell you.
