Yesterday, Karoline Leavitt was sent out to tell the media that Señor Trumpanzyy “stands strongly behind Pete Hegseth,” even though the decision to shit can him seems to have already been made. Leavitt blamed Hegseth’s cascading problems on “the entire Pentagon working against” him, claiming, absurdly, that Hegseth “is doing phenomenal leading the Pentagon…This is what happens when the entire Pentagon is working against you and working against the monumental change you are trying to implement.”
Former Bridadier General Don Bacon, the former commander of Ramstein Air Base in Germany and Offut Air Base in Nebraska, now a Republican congressman representing Omaha and a member of the House Armed Services Committee suggested Trump just fire Hegseth and put him and the Pentagon out of its misery, “calling the chaos at the Pentagon one reason why many Hill Republicans were privately uneasy with the Defense secretary’s nomination in the first place. ‘I had concerns from the get-go because Pete Hegseth didn’t have a lot of experience,’ [said]Bacon. ‘I like him on Fox. But does he have the experience to lead one of the largest organizations in the world? That’s a concern… I’m not in the White House, and I’m not going to tell the White House how to manage this… but I find it unacceptable, and I wouldn’t tolerate it if I was in charge,’ Bacon continued… ‘Russia and China put up thousands of people to monitor all these phone calls at the very top, and the No. 1 target besides the president… would be the secretary of Defense,’ said Bacon. ‘Russia and China are all over his phone, and for him to be putting secret stuff on his phone is not right. He’s acting like he’s above the law— and that shows an amateur person… It looks like there’s a meltdown going on,’ Bacon said. ‘There’s a lot of smoke coming out of the Pentagon, and I got to believe there’s some fire there somewhere.’”
According the NPR, Trump had already made up his mind to look for a new Secretary of Defense. They didn't mention whether or not that means extra hours watching Fox News. The White House called their report fake news of course.

Ryan Bort and Asawin Suebsaeng wrote that Hegseth “barely received enough votes to win confirmation as Donald Trump’s defense secretary. Three Republicans even bucked their own party’s president to oppose him. One of them, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), cited ‘accusations of financial mismanagement and problems with the workplace culture he fostered.’ Another, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), said Hegseth had ‘failed to demonstrate’ that he could manage ‘nearly 3 million military and civilian personnel, an annual budget of nearly $1 trillion.’ It hasn’t taken long for Hegseth to prove them— along with every Senate Democrat and the countless others who warned about him taking over the Pentagon— right.”
It was the first time Hegseth has commented at length on the past week of dysfunction at the Pentagon. The Democratic National Committee wrote Sunday night on Twitter that Hegseth “needs to go,” to which he replied, “Your agenda is illegals, trans & DEI— all of which are no longer allowed @ DoD.”
The DEI card is just about all Hegseth has to play as it becomes clearer and clearer that he is in over his head.
