Recently, I shared the story about how I first met Madonna backstage at Madison Square Garden. She was donating the night’s concert proceeds— a million dollars— to an AIDS charity. I was really impressed by her gesture and it opened me up to listening to her music.
I came to Jim Lough’s music by a different route— through the music. I love his songs and I was thrilled when he created versions of his music for some of the Blue America candidates’ campaigns. His latest project, a 5 song EP called You, is something you can listen to on his Old Town Crier band camp page. Aside from the music, you’ll find this message on the page:
All proceeds from this album were donated to three Progressives running in the 2022 US midterm elections-- Christine Olivo (FL-26) - Angelica Duenas (CA-29)-- Derek Marshall (CA-23). Through listener support alone, this page raised over $2,700 for the cause. All proceeds will now be donated to Rev. Raphael Warnock (GA Sen) until December 6, 2022.
When he says "all proceeds," he doesn’t mean all proceeds after expenses… he means all proceeds, every cent for a song or for the whole album goes directly to Raphael Warnock’s runoff campaign. I don’t have to lecture any DWT reader how important this runoff is. Jim noted that “Rev. Warnock is running an honest campaign on an honest platform and it's my honor to support him. This runoff election in GA on December 6 may prove to be the most impactful election in our history as a nation.”
I want to encourage DWT readers to go to his page, listen to his music and buy the EP. Like, I said, all the money goes directly to the Warnock campaign. You get the music and you’re also making a contribution to the country’s future. “My latest album, You, has raised over $2,700 for progressive candidates running for House seats in the 2022 midterms,” said JIm. “I am truly inspired by the outpouring of support from my listeners, and I've decided to continue using my music as a device for social change. All proceeds will now go directly to Rev. Raphael Warnock in his efforts to secure a GA senate seat in the runoff election on December 6.”
He adapted the title track to Blue America’s efforts for Jason Call’s congressional campaign in Washington state. Listen:
Christmas is coming up. Maybe there’s someone in your family you’d like to give Jim’s music to? This is the way to do it… or you can contribute directly to the Warnock campaign here without the music. By the way, today's Neil Young's birthday. Jim's music has always reminded me of Neil's music. Give it a listen if you're a Neil fan.
