Will Trump Be Impeached For A Third Time?

Dan Goldman isn’t my idea of a good Democrat. A centrist Dem, he represents one of the most progressive districts in NYC— Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Red Hook, Gowanus, Prospect Heights, Park Slope… With a D+35 PVI, Trump managed just 19% of the vote, his second-worst performance in the state. Goldman, an hereditary (Levi Strauss fortune) multimillionaire, is one of Congress’ wealthiest members. But he only has the 116th “best” voting record— to the right of shitty NY Dems like George Latimer, Ritchie Torres and Hakeem Jeffries. The only reason he was elected in this district— beating progressive legislator Yuh-Line Niou by around a thousand votes— is because almost half the votes were cast for half a dozen other progressives, basically fringe candidates with no real chance to win.
All that said, he’s been one of the most effective— and sometimes entertaining Trump antagonists in the whole House… and that counts for something. He’s one of the few members of Congress already talking about a third impeachment. In an interview with Scripps News, he pointed to Trump's recent executive order that places independent government agencies under his control an unprecedented and likely illegal seizure of power that is “compromising the independence of agencies like the Federal Trade Commission and Securities and Exchange Commission, which were created by Congress to operate free from political influence.”
Goldman said that “Trump wants to put every single thing in the executive branch under his thumb, so that he can use all of the executive branch agencies for his own personal interests and for his own political retribution. It is absolutely lawless in many different ways, including the fact that it has to come back to Congress in order for it not to be independent... If we have no rule of law, if court orders cannot be relied upon and cannot be trusted, it doesn't just undermine our government, it undermines every single contract that is entered in this country, and ultimately, it ruins the foundation of our democracy, of our economy, and certainly of our government.”
He says that Señor T “has already committed ‘dozens of impeachable offenses’ in his first 30 days in office… ‘He's violating the Constitution right, left, and center. The reality is the Republicans control the House and they control the Senate,’ Goldman said. ‘And not only are they in control in the majority, and therefore they would have to lead any kind of impeachment investigation, but they have demonstrated such a lack of spine and will and determination to even just uphold their own power. They're giving away their own authority in Congress and just turning it over to Donald Trump.’”
[Aside from Goldman, the only other members I know of starting the impeachment chatter are Al Green (D-TX) and Jamie Raskin (D-MD). Green has already filed articles of impeachment over Trump’s comments on a U.S. “takeover” of the Gaza Strip, among other reasons. “‘The movement to impeach the president has begun,’ Green said on the House floor Wednesday morning. ‘I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.’”]
As for Goldman… if we have to be stuck with a wealthy Zionist, neo-liberal like him, seeing him effectively and regularly tearing into Trump is the least we could hope for.
