Within moments of Trump announcing he would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, suckup and queen of performative bullshit Marjorie Traitor Greene announced she was writing the bill. 13 of the most extreme crackpots in the House were the initial co-sponsors:
Mary Miller (R-IL) R+22
Barry Moore (R-AL) R+17
Claudia Tenney (R-NY) 24
Mike Collins (R-GA) R+15
Randy Weber (R-TX) R+17
Andy Ogles (R-TN) R+9
Mike Haridopolos (R-FL) R+11
Greg Steube (R-FL) R+10
Eric Burlison (R-MO) R+24
Brian Babin (R-TX) R+18
Michael Rulli (R-OH) R+16
Troy Nehls (R-TX) R+11
Brandon Gill (R-TX) R+13
You’ll noticed that all these extremists represent districts filled with voters who are also extremists, districts carefully gerrymandered so that only Republicans can win in them. But there was one more Republican who also signed on as an original co-sponsor:
Mike Lawler’s Westchester-Rockland county district has a very make up and a very different PVI: D+3. Biden beat Trump there by a tad over 10 points in 2020. And while Lawler beat Mondaire Jones, an extremely weak and damaged opponent by 6 points in 2024, Trump lost, albeit narrowly, to Kamala Harris. Lawler’s campaign was largely based on a shaky claim that he is somehow a mainstream, non-extremist, Republican who could keep his party from going off the deep end, the end he just held hands with Marjorie Traitor Greene to jump off.
