I suppose at least some of you will be spending some time tomorrow with people who voted for the single biggest internal threat to our national security this nation has ever had, aka America's #1 terrorist leader, aka Traitor Don Trump. No doubt they vote for other nazis and white supremacists, too. You know, "very fine people." Some of you may be sitting down to celebrate Thanksgiving with people so obsessed with other people's sex lives that they even care what gender they identify as; and people who favor the right to control the bodies of half the population. I grew up in a little New Jersey town full of people like that. Many of my closest friends experienced anti-Semitism first hand and oh how I cherish the high school memories of fellow students casually making racist and anti-Semitic statements to me thinking I would be in agreement!
So, I grew up with definite loner tendencies that gave me the advantage of having a lot of time to think and to listen after school to WBAI, a radio station with a decidedly leftist approach. By 1969, I was calling Nixon and John Mitchell and that gang exactly what they were, Nazis. You might say, my environment had given me the proper perspective even if a lot of people didn't agree. Needless to say, I was very gratified when the Nixon tapes came out a few years later and offered additional and more graphic proof of what I had concluded from what was obvious. Nixon's recorded comments about blacks and jews were a sad vindication. They could have come from way too many of the people on the very street I grew up on.
Well, there ya go. I know that many of you will go home tomorrow evening feeling not at all unlike the couple in the above cartoon, probably worse. So many years have gone by. So much remains the same.
Addendum: Another thing remains the same. The people who know exactly what happened in Dallas 60 years ago today still haven't told us exactly what happened. That means the truth must be severely ugly.
Excellent.
I would add, wrt nixon, that a few years ago when LBJ's records were declassified/released, it verified that in 1968 nixon's people were sent to Europe to tell many different nations' mediators to pass the message to the NV peace negotiators to avoid reaching any kind of ceasefire or other peace agreement with LBJ's negotiators. He promised them a better deal after the election if he got elected. (note: he lied. YOOOOGE surprise!)
note2: Some time after nixon resigned over Watergate and its coverup, the great Helen Thomas was asked when it was that she first realized that nixon had lied. Her response should be etched on his headstone: "1947".
So all you who remember that era, ponder an…
