Sunday Thoughts

by Noah
I remember lots of nice Easters I experienced as a child. Fortunately, none of them, not a single one, included any kind of reenactments of the crucifixion. The closest we used to come to that when I was a kid was always the Sunday before, Palm Sunday. The palms would be handed out after the service and then us unruly kids would go running around the churchyard whipping each other with the palms like maniacs. How's that for a religious frenzy? Hell, what did they expect us to do with them? Innocents that we were, we knew nothing about the various religious nuts that actually flog themselves in religious parades. Yes, Christianity leads the way in literal self flagellation but it's not unique. However, the church I was dragged to in those early, formative years wasn't that bad. It was an Episcopal church and it was run by my grandfather, a man who entered the priesthood as a trained Anglican priest, a Church of England guy. Being of English heritage, I'm sure some part of him saw us kids whipping each other and approved. Â
