Bernie Endorsed Josh Weil— Trump Panicked And Re-Endorsed His Bigoted, Corrupt Swamp Creature

Writer: Howie KleinHowie Klein

As we saw yesterday, the preeminent Trump pollster, Tony Fabrizio, reported a new FL-06 poll showing Democrat Josh Weil up 3 points over MAGA extremist Randy Fine. That’s 44 to 41% in an R+14 congressional district that Trump won massively— 64.5 to 34.5%. We're talking about Ron DeSantis' old congressional district, not some kind of swing district. That poll had a lot to do with why Trump pulled Elise Stefanik’s nomination to be UN ambassador. It also had a lot to do with Trump jumping on Truth Social yesterday and re-endorsing Fine... just in case anyone forgot.

Although that wasn’t the only reason Trump re-endorsed the struggling, unpopular Fine. On Friday, Bernie officially endorsed Weil, joining Ted Lieu, Ro Khanna and Mark Pocan who had already done so. That’s all the more interesting when you consider that the DCCC has adamantly refused to endorse Weil and has gone off the record to tell media that Weil couldn’t win— even as the Republicans have panicked and brought in the big guns— with last minute investments pouring into the district from Elon Musk and from the crypto-cartel. But if the DCCC is keeping Weil, a full on New Deal Democrat, at arms’ length, far more money from grassroots Dems across the country has been coming in for him than they would ever give— nearly $14 million as of this weekend! His ground game is certainly well-funded and that could make all the difference in the world. The establishment Democratic Party is hated by voters in this part of Florida while Bernie is admired. Weil is better off without the backing of a corporate hack like DCCC chair Suzan DelBene.

Early voting exit polls show Weil narrowly ahead. If you’re a late-in-the-game campaign donor, it’s still not too late to help with Weil's all-important get-out-the-vote efforts between now and Tuesday.

Meanwhile, it's important to remember that Fine isn't just a run-of-the-mill MAGA extremist— he’s a uniquely toxic figure, even by the GOP’s debased standards. His tenure in the Florida legislature has been defined by cruelty, corruption and a relentless drive to impose far-right ideology on Floridians. He’s probably best known for his obsessive crusade against LGBTQ equality, pushing book bans and championing the forced erasure of history in public schools. He embodies the authoritarian impulse of DeSantis-style Republicanism, but with even fewer scruples and an unhinged personal vendetta against anyone who dares oppose him. And now he and DeSantis are at war with each other!

Fine has a long and well-documented history of corruption, enriching himself through backroom deals while pushing policies that harm Florida working families. His connections to shady developers and big-money special interests— most recently, the crypto billionaires pouring cash into his flailing campaign— make it clear that his loyalties lie with the highest bidder, not his constituents.

And then there's his temperament which has made him so disliked among his colleagues and constituents. He isn’t just an extremist— he’s a deeply unstable one. His social media outbursts and unprofessional conduct make him an embarrassment even to the Florida GOP. This is a man who has openly called for political violence, threatened public officials, and spent more time engaged in Twitter feuds than legislating. It’s no surprise that Trump had to parachute in at the last minute to try and save him. Randy Fine's history of inflammatory rhetoric includes a particularly alarming incident last November. As a Florida legislator and congressional candidate, he posted a message on Twitter directed at Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib— the only two Muslim women in Congress— stating, “The ‘Hebrew Hammer’ is coming. @RashidaTlaib and @IlhanMN might consider leaving before I get there. #BombsAway.” That hashtag was widely interpreted as a veiled threat, given Fine's previous use of the phrase in aggressive contexts.

This post drew immediate condemnation from civil rights organizations. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) labeled Fine an “unhinged anti-Muslim bigot” and called for investigations by state and federal authorities. CAIR also urged increased security measures for Omar and Tlaib in light of the escalating threats. His ugly rhetoric not only endangers specific individuals but also contributes to a broader climate of intolerance and division.

The fact that Fine is even struggling in an R+14 district tells you everything you need to know: Florida voters, even many Republicans, see him for the fraud and extremist that he is. If Democrats, independents, and disaffected Republicans show up in full force, Josh Weil can pull off a political earthquake— one that will send shockwaves through the entire 2026 election cycle.

There is an arrogance bordering on hubris in today's GOP. Trump winning popular vote by a close plurality and GOP gaining a decent Senate majority and a narrow House majority let them to conclude that they had a mandate to remake our society. By contrast, Obama winning a substantial popular vote margin and Dems gaining huge majorities in both houses led Dems to their usual futile attempts at "bipartisanship" with the GOP.

Perhaps the GOP has already overplayed its hand. It would be far more likely for the GOP to suffer the consequences of its arrogance if it actually faced a true opposition party. Maybe a mass outpouring of grassroots financial support and a determined challenger in a red CD…

So. People are finally waking up even in Floriduh. Better late than never but far far too late for the 2024 election that got us into this disaster and the destruction of our government. Much easier and faster to destroy than fix.

How could anyone look at and listen to The Orange Menace and think yeah I’ll go with him. Well they did. FAFO. We are in the finding out stage.

When my friend referred to the Trump administration's budget cutting as class warfare, I replied we'd been in a class war, this is the rape and pillage phase.
